    I. MICROSOFT WINDOWS LOGO KEYBOARD TEST OVERVIEW
   
    The Microsoft Windows Logo Keyboard is provided to OEM's ( Original 
    Equipment Manufacturers) and IHV's (Internal Hardware Vendors) to 
    verify that their keyboard (and optional keyboard driver) are 
    performing correctly on the Windows operating system(s). The        
    PASS/FAIL results of the tests are kept in an encrypted file named
    RESULTS.LOG. 


    This test is designed to verify: 
    
	- virtual key codes and Windows scancodes are being correctly
	  sent to the system when the keyboard is in the default scan 
	  code set (scan code set 1).

	- two key combinations (as defined in the newkeys.doc document) 
	  send the correct virtual keycodes and Windows scancodes.

	- three key combinations (as defined in the newkeys.doc 
	  document) send the correct virtual keycodes and Windows 
	  scancodes.    

    
    This test DOES NOT:

	- verify the accuracy of the make and break codes produced by 
	  the keyboard firmware, or

	- test the timing of the data sent by the keyboard.



    1.Installing the WinKey tests.

    Create a directory on your hardisk to place the WinKey test files
    in (e.g. c:\winkey), then copy all the files from the distribution
    disk to this subdirectory (e.g. copy a:*.* c:\winkey).

    Included on the distribution disk is a keyboard driver that must
    be used when running the WinKey tests. To install this driver
    perform the following steps:

	1) From DOS, load the Windows file SYSTEM.INI into your
	   favorite editor.

	2) Under the [boot] section locate the line that reads:
	    keyboard.drv=keyboard.drv (or similar driver).

	3) Place a semicolon in front of this line, e.g.:
	    ;keyboard.drv=keyboard.drv

	4) Add a new line to the [boot] section that reads:
	    keyboard.drv=c:\winkey\wkhct.drv

	5) Save the changes to the file.

    After you have finnished running the tests, you can restore your
    machine to its initial state by removing the line added in step
    5 above and removing the semicolon added in step 4 above.


    2. User Interface
  
    The screen is divided into four parts: a representation of the 
    keyboard, a status window, command buttons, and a status bar. 


	A. Onscreen Keyboard    
	
	As you press the keys on the physical keyboard, the 
	corresponding keys on the display will depress and release.
	While a test is running, the faces of the keys will change color 
	to denote the different states a key may have as follows:
	
	    BLUE    - Blue is used to prompt the use for the next key(s) 
		      to be pressed.

	    GREEN   - The face of a key turns green if it passed the 
		      test.
	    
	    YELLOW  - If the user clicks on a key with the primary mouse 
		      button while the test is running, the face of the 
		      key will turn yellow. This also informs the
		      program that it should skip this key for testing.
			   
		
	    RED     - If the correct virtual key code or Windows 
		      scancode is not received when a key is pressed, 
		      the face of the key will turn red to denote that 
		      there is an error.

    
	B. Status Window

	Each time a key is pressed, the Virtual Keycode, Windows 
	Scancode, and Keyname will be displayed in the Status Window. 
	While running tests, key failures will be displayed here as 
	well.
	
	
	C. Command Buttons

	The six command buttons are only accessible by clicking on them 
	with primary mouse button. The buttons have following functions:

	[Run]
	    Pops up a menu of available tests to run. Note that tests 
	    must be run in progression (i.e. One Key Test before the Two 
	    Key Test). This also has the side effect of deleting the 
	    last log file (if it exists) of the test currently being 
	    run.

	[Pause]
	    Available while running a test. Pressing this button causes 
	    the button text to change to "Resume". While in Pause mode 
	    the program ignores all keyboard input. 

	[Reports]
	    Pops up a menu of available reports to view. Choosing a 
	    valid menu option starts a Notepad session with the log file 
	    for that test type as its contents. Note that the three key 
	    log file may be larger than permissible by notepad. In this 
	    case it will be necessary to use another editor (such as 
	    Write) to view the contents of the log file.     

	[Clear]
	    Clears the current session.

	[Exit]
	    Saves the current state of the program and exits. 


	[Help]
	    Launches a notepad session containing the file README.TXT.

    
	D. Status Bar

	When a test is running, the current key combination to be 
	pressed will be displayed in the status bar. 


    3. Running the Tests
    
    To begin running the tests, click Run. At this point you will be 
    presented with a menu of available tests to run. After choosing an 
    available test to run the user will be prompted to press key combos. 
    Prompting of the keys to be pressed is done by coloring the face of 
    the keys to be pressed BLUE and also displaying the combo in the 
    status bar at the bottom of the screen.

    At any time after choosing to run a test, the user may specify keys 
    to skip by clicking on the key with the primary mouse button. The 
    key face will turn yellow and will be skipped. Clicking on a skipped 
    key with the secondary mouse button will reverse the status of the 
    key, causing the face color to change to light gray and be part of 
    the test.

    If a key press results in an incorrect scan code or virtual key 
    code, the user will be prompted to either try the key again or log 
    the key as an error. If the user chooses to log the key as an error, 
    the face of the key will turn red and the appropriate information 
    will be logged to the status window and written to the logging file.


    
    
      One Key Test

	This test verifies that all single key presses result in the 
	correct scan codes and virtual key codes being sent to the test 
	app. This test  must be completed with all keys PASSing before 
	the 2 or 3 key combo tests may be run. To run the test, simply 
	press the key that is shown in the Status bar. The face of the 
	key to be pressed will turn blue as an aid to the user. 
	
    
      
      Two Key Test

	This test verifies that 2 key combos using the Alt, Ctrl, Shift 
	and Windows keys and a second key result in the correct scan 
	code and virtual key codes being sent to the test app. This test 
	does not have to have a PASSing result for the 3 key combo test 
	to be run. To run the test, simply press the 2 key combo that is 
	displayed in the status bar. As an aid to the user, the color of 
	the key faces to press will turn blue. While running the test, 
	the user may hold the modifer key down without releasing it 
	between key presses.


      Three Key Test

	This test verifies that 3 key combos using combinations of the 
	ALT, CTRL, SHIFT and WINDOWS logo keys and a third key result in 
	the correct scan code and virtual key codes being sent to the 
	test app. To run the test, simply press the 3 key combo that is 
	displayed in the status bar. As an aid to the user, the color of 
	the key faces to press will turn blue. While running the test,
